West Cobb Prep

Science

Our Science program focuses on expanding and building upon children's natural curiosity and gives them experiences with the world around them such that they learn to find their own answers through careful observation and guided exploration. Students study diverse branches of science, including life, physical, earth and aerospace science.

Science topics for Pre-K and Kindergarten include the five senses, our body, hygiene, nutrition, seasons, animals, space, planets, environments, motion, and gravity. The youngest students play, sing, build, observe and manipulate materials to broaden their base knowledge of a wide range of topics. Past field trips have included the Tellus Museum, Zoo Atlanta, Botanical Garden,  and the Dunwoody Nature Center.

Science topics for First and Second Grade include properties of matter, solids/liquids/gases, seasonal changes and investigation, energy/light/heat and motion, pushes and pulls, changes of speed, night sky/moon phases and stars, and life cycles and fungi. Past field trips have included the Tellus Museum, Dunwoody Nature Center and the Georgia Technology Paper Museum.

By the end of their time at West Cobb, students have a broad knowledge base of many science topics. They have become good at observing and using what they see to answer some of their own 'how' questions. The hands-on experiences that are age-appropriate insures that they are ready to move on from West Cobb with a positive attitude about the study of science. Our approach to science gives children both a grounding in basic knowledge and confidence in their abilities to find more answers.
